Synopsis

The talk will present the work completed on the redevelopment of the Shell Centre in Waterloo, London. The project, known as Southbank Place, has been undertaken by a joint venture of Qatari Diar and Canary Wharf Group. Completion of the sub-structure in 2017 brings to a close many years of involvement for Arup geotechnics. The talk will cover:

  • The site history including the historic measurements of the Bakerloo Line from the original 1950s development
  • Foundation design for the eight new buildings
  • Results of preliminary pile testing under bentonite in London Clay and Lambeth Group
  • The installation of piles 1m off live running LUL tunnels, including a full scale instrumented field trial
  • A novel method for assessing the re-use of existing under-reamed piles
  • Use of instrumentation in LUL tunnels

Speaker Biography

Stuart Hardy

Stuart is an Associate Director in the London geotechnics group of Arup. After completing an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and a PhD in geotechnical engineering at Imperial College, Stuart has worked on a number of challenging basement and foundation projects located mainly in the Middle East and London.These have included the new Wembley Stadium, the Exhibition Road Building for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the redevelopment of the Shell Centre building in Waterloo.

Stuart is UK representative on the EC7 evolution group for the design of embedded retaining walls, a lead author on the CIRIA C760 publication on the design of embedded retaining walls and until recently led the geotechnical design of the S1 and S2 D&B packages on HS2.

Anton Pillai

Anton is an Associate Director in the London geotechnics group of Arup. He did his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at City University and then obtained master’s degree in Soil Mechanics at Imperial College. Anton has 25 years’ experience in the UK and in South East Asia on a wide variety of projects, specialising in the geotechnical design of underground, offshore and maritime structures.

He is the team leader for modelling and analyses of complex 2D and 3D geotechnical, tunnelling and offshore problems. He has worked on several challenging projects such as Bangkok Metro, Crossrail. Queensferry Crossing, HS2 and several basement projects across the globe
