Synopsis

This presentation will provide an overview of the local geology and geotechnical challenges encountered on the Northern Ireland Executive Flagship A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe Dualling project. The £220million, 25.5km dualling project, which includes a bypass of Dungiven, commenced in April 2018 and is scheduled for completion in spring 2022.Areas requiring ground improvement or special measures for stable construction and some of the bridge foundation works will be discussed.

Michael McLernon MEng PhD CEng: AECOM - Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Ground, Energy & Transactions Solutions

Michael is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer based in Belfast with over 12 years’ experience in the industry. His experience includes PhD research at Queens University, both Client and consultancy roles within the Department for Infrastructure, and consultancy role with AECOM.

Paul Kissane BA BAI PhD CEng: Roughan & O’Donovan - Associate

Paul is a Registered Ground Engineering Specialist and leads ROD's Geotechnical Group, based in Dublin. Paul's project experience in Northern Ireland hits several locations-starting in the east with Narrow Water Bridge and A2 Shore Road -Greenisland before moving westwards with the two A6 projects, A6 Randalstown to Castledawson Dualling and A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe Dualling. A career highlight was winning the Engineers Ireland Award for Excellence in Geoscience in 2018 as part of the team on the Northern Spire project in Sunderland.
