This joint BTS Young Members and BGA Early Career Group event will see Dr Binod L. Amatya present on the topic of Kathmandu Soil: Obstacles and Opportunities.
This presentation will briefly highlight the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and its impact within the Kathmandu Valley. Ground conditions in the valley will be briefly discussed to illustrate some reasons for the variation of damage within the cities and how such inherent ground features could impact development of future infrastructure. The capital is in need of rehabilitation and new development to keep it organised, vibrant and future proof. In this regard, the presentation will discuss how a metro rail network in the valley could be developed to address the ongoing huge problem of transportation services. A concept of ‘Crossrail in Kathmandu’ and the prospect of developing a network of underground rail tunnels beneath the city will also be presented. Discussion will also highlight the challenges imposed by the nature of the subsurface soils and geology of the valley and address how to build such future infrastructure in the local context to regenerate the capital.
