2024 BGA Case Histories Award Winner announced

The British Geotechnical Association (BGA) is pleased to announce that the 2024 BGA Case Histories Award has been awarded to authors Peter Hensman, Zhandos Orazalin and Brian Sheil for their paper “Monitoring the construction of a deep energy-from-waste bunker in soft clay and peat” in Géotechnique, published 2023.

The paper can be accessed via the ICE Virtual Library HERE.

Five entries were received for the award this year, all of which were of a very high standard, leaving the judging panel with a very challenging task in selecting the winner.

The judges agreed that the winning paper provides a detailed account of predicted and observed performance for the project, making very good use of visual aids to effectively convey key findings. This set of data covers a ‘combi-wall’, an increasingly popular retaining system, within challenging ground conditions (soft clays and peats), thereby offering valuable knowledge for future projects.

The BGA Case Histories Award is to encourage and recognise the importance of exchange of exemplary geotechnical knowledge and experience of the performance of constructed works. The award is presented for an outstanding contribution to the knowledge and experience of the United Kingdom geotechnical engineering profession through the publication of a well-considered and researched case history or histories, or the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories that provide beneficial insights into the geotechnical aspects of constructed works.
